John Spencer
Lead Scientific Advisor
John started out as an undergraduate at Sussex. After a 1st Class Hons (Chemistry/French) he was awarded an Erasmus-funded PhD grant in palladium chemistry at the elite French Chemistry department in Strasbourg University, France, (ULP Louis Pasteur, in Michel Pfeffer’s group) then undertook postdoctoral studies on a Chiral2 scholarship at ETH, Zurich, with Prof Antonio Togni. He next spent a decade in small to medium biotech companies and start-ups, half of which were spent in the Nobel laureate, James Black Foundation, and had preclinical, Phase I and II clinical candidates in thrombosis (thrombin inhibitor) and cancer (CCK2 and PTH-1 antagonists).
With industrial leadership in medicinal chemistry and a consistent track record of successful project delivery and IP generation, John has secured several million pounds of external research funding from Research Councils, Charities (Niemann Pick Foundation, Blood Cancer UK, CRUK, Worldwide Cancer), EU and companies (e.g. AZ, GSK, Tocris). He has over 200 publications and patents, with >8500 citations and an H-index of 41, and has successfully trained over 25 PhD students and as many postdoctoral fellows.
He has a successful track record of mentoring junior colleagues in research strategy and grant bids and has held several positions of responsibility: Director of Drug Discovery Centre, previous Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange, committee member for new course generation (Pharmacy), PhD convenor for Department, UK grant committee chairman (RSC). He has an international external profile; 2 editorial board positions, regular invited editor for journals, invited academic positions abroad (Auckland), plenary and invited lectures. SAB member for Worldwide Cancer Research, Prostate Cancer UK, EPSRC Peer Review College member.
His role with 113-Botanicals is to help deliver the scientific vision, especially in terms of R&D and synthetic/medicinal chemistry.

Nour Nashed
Research Consultant
Holds a BSc(Hons.) degree in pharmacy from the University of Aleppo in Syria. Her high academic achievement enabled her to work as an Assistant Lecturer, as well as a Community Pharmacist, whilst attaining her Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. This interdisciplinary education and practical experience ignited Nour’s specific interest in pharmaceutical science leading her to pursue a PhD in the UK.
She was granted, by the University of Sussex, a full-time PhD in pharmaceutics specialising in the research into safe and effective medications and development of more efficacious routes of administration.
Alongside successfully completing her PhD programme in 2024, Nour continued to work as research assistant at the University of Sussex as well as under short term contract with several big pharma companies.
Nour has published three academic papers in high ranked scientific journals. Nour's impressive knowledge and research skills in formulation development of oral dosage forms made her the obvious choice for inclusion in our technology team.
